Current Account Bank Statement: UK and India Explained

6 min readOctober 27, 2026

Quick Answer: A current account bank statement is the statement for your current account: in the UK, the everyday account your salary goes into and your bills come out of; in India, a transaction account aimed at businesses and professionals. It lists every payment in and out with a running balance. In the UK, download one from online banking or the app.

A current account statement is a dated record of every transaction on a current account, with an opening balance, a running balance and a closing balance for the period. The term is British and Indian banking language. "Current" describes the type of account, the one built for frequent payments, not whether the statement is recent.

Which "current" do you mean?

The phrase trips people up because it has two readings in English:

  • Current account (the account type). This guide. Common in the UK, Ireland, India, South Africa and much of the Commonwealth, where "current account" is roughly what Americans call a checking account.
  • Current statement (the latest one). A landlord or visa office asking for a "current bank statement" usually means a recent statement, often dated within the last month or three. That is a question about dates, covered in our guide to getting a current bank statement.

There is also a US fintech called Current; its exports are a separate topic again. If you are not sure which one a form wants, ask the person who sent it: "a statement for my current account, or my most recent statement?"

What is a current account in the UK and in India?

In the UK, a current account is the standard personal bank account. NatWest's account pages, for instance, describe its Select account as an "everyday bank account" and market a switching offer for people moving "your current account held elsewhere". Wages, card spending, Direct Debits and standing orders all run through it. Businesses have business current accounts on the same model.

In India, the term leans towards business. HDFC Bank's current account range is sold as "Biz+" accounts for traders, manufacturers, builders, healthcare, hospitality, IT and self-employed professionals, with features such as free cash deposit limits and balance commitment waivers tied to business volumes through PoS terminals or soundboxes. Individuals' everyday banking in India typically happens in a savings account instead. HDFC also lists a set of older current account variants as discontinued for new sourcing with effect from 1 May 2025, which matters if your statement shows an account name you cannot find on the bank's current product list.

What does a current account statement show?

Layouts differ by bank, but the substance is consistent. Expect:

  1. Header details: account holder name and address, account number, branch or sort code, and in India the IFSC and often the customer ID.
  2. Statement period and the date it was produced.
  3. Opening balance (sometimes "balance brought forward").
  4. Transaction lines, each with date, description, money out, money in and the balance after it. Descriptions carry the payment method: card purchase, Direct Debit, standing order, transfer, cash deposit, cheque, UPI or NEFT reference in India.
  5. Charges and interest, including any overdraft interest or account fees for the period.
  6. Closing balance ("carried forward").

On Indian current accounts you may also see figures linked to the average monthly balance (AMB), because pricing often depends on it. HDFC's Biz Lite+ and Biz Pro+ accounts, for example, set free cash deposits as a rupee cap or a multiple of the current month's AMB. If you are charged a non-maintenance fee, the statement is where it appears.

Reading the running balance

The balance column is the quickest check that nothing is missing. Each line's balance should equal the previous balance plus money in, minus money out. A short illustrative extract:

DateDescriptionOutInBalance
01 MarBalance brought forward1,240.00
01 MarSalary, employer name2,150.003,390.00
02 MarDirect Debit, energy supplier96.403,293.60
03 MarCard purchase, supermarket54.183,239.42

If a line does not add up, a transaction is missing from the page you are reading, or a pending item was settled at a different amount.

How is it different from a savings account statement?

Current account statementSavings account statement
Purpose of the accountEveryday or business paymentsHolding money and earning interest
Volume of linesDozens to thousands a monthUsually a handful
OverdraftOften available; limit and interest show on the statementRarely
Interest creditedOften little or none, depending on the bank and accountShown as a regular credit
Who asks for itLenders checking income and spending, accountants, tax authorities, visa officesVisa offices and lenders checking savings, auditors
Typical use as evidenceProof of income, regular outgoings, business turnoverProof of funds

The practical difference is what a reader is looking for. Someone reviewing a current account statement wants the pattern: salary arriving on time, rent going out, no unexplained large transfers, the account rarely overdrawn. Someone reviewing a savings statement wants the balance, and how long it has been there.

How do you get a current account statement?

Menus differ from one bank to the next, so use your own bank's help pages. Two examples show the general shape.

UK example: NatWest

NatWest's statement help page explains that you can save and print PDF versions of current account, savings and credit card statements from Online Banking, and that you get an email when your latest statement is ready.

  • Online Banking: select Statements & transactions from the main menu, then Statements in the "Your statements" section. Choose the year in the time period dropdown, then click the statement cycle link to download the PDF.
  • Mobile app: select the account, tap the three-dot icon at the top and choose statements. Open the statement you want and use the export button at the top right.

Our longer guides to the NatWest bank statement and the Lloyds bank statement cover older statements, closed accounts and posted copies.

India example: HDFC Bank

HDFC's current account pages focus on the product rather than the statement menus. Our HDFC bank statement guide covers the download routes and the statement password. If a lender wants a signed or stamped copy, ask at your branch.

When someone asks for one: practical tips

  • Send the PDF the bank produced, not a screenshot of the transaction list. It carries the bank name, your details and the period, which reviewers check.
  • Match the period exactly. Three months means three full statement cycles, not the last 90 days of a transaction search.
  • Use the account the request is about. For a business loan in India, that is the current account receiving business income, not a personal savings account.
  • Check the overdraft lines. A reviewer will notice repeated overdraft interest; be ready to explain it.

For your own analysis, such as working out monthly outgoings or business turnover, a spreadsheet is easier than a PDF. Some banks also offer CSV downloads of transactions from online banking. If you only have PDF statements, QuickBankConvert reads them into rows of date, description, amount and running balance, exported as CSV or Excel, including password-protected PDFs once you enter the password. The free account covers a few statements a month; pricing lists the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a current account statement the same as a bank statement?

Yes, it is a bank statement for one particular type of account: the everyday transaction account in the UK, or the business transaction account in India. "Current" names the account type, not the date.

What is the difference between a current account and a savings account statement?

A current account statement is dominated by day-to-day payments in and out, often with an overdraft limit. A savings statement usually has few transactions and shows interest credited.

Can I download a NatWest current account statement as a PDF?

Yes. NatWest says to select Statements & transactions in Online Banking, then Statements, pick the year and click the statement cycle link to download the PDF. The app has an export option on each statement.

Why does an Indian bank ask me to keep an average monthly balance on a current account?

Indian current accounts are often priced around an average monthly balance (AMB). HDFC Bank, for example, ties some free cash deposit limits on its Biz+ current accounts to a multiple of the current month's AMB.

Does an Indian freelancer need a current account statement?

Many Indian banks market current accounts to self-employed professionals as well as companies. If a client, lender or tax adviser asks for business banking records, the statement of the account you use for business receipts is the one they mean.
