Get a Current Bank Statement: What Counts and How

6 min readOctober 26, 2026

Quick Answer: A "current bank statement" almost always means the most recent statement your bank has issued, the one for the last closed cycle, as a full PDF with your name, account number, period and balances. Download it from your bank's statements section online or in the app. If the person asking needs activity after that closing date, add a transaction history printout or a bank letter, and ask a branch to stamp it if they want it verified.

When a landlord, lender or visa office asks for your current bank statement, they want the latest official statement your bank has produced, not a screenshot of today's balance. Banks issue those at the end of each statement cycle. Getting one takes a minute online; the only tricky case is when you need something more recent than your last closing date.

What does "current bank statement" mean?

A bank statement is a document for a fixed period, usually a month, that the bank produces when that period closes. HelpWithMyBank.gov, run by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, explains that banks must provide statements at least monthly for accounts with electronic transfers, and at least quarterly otherwise. So at any moment, your current statement is the newest one in that series.

Three things often get confused with it:

DocumentWhat it isUsually accepted as a "current statement"?
Latest monthly statement (PDF)The bank's official record for the last closed cycleYes
Transaction history or activity printoutWhatever date range you select, up to today, often without letterhead or balancesSometimes, as a supplement
Bank letter or account verification letterA signed letter from the bank confirming the account and balanceOften, especially for visas
Screenshot of the appA picture of a screenRarely

If a request says "current statement" and nothing else, send the latest monthly PDF, all pages, including the blank or marketing pages. Missing pages are a common reason documents get sent back.

How recent is "current" for a landlord, lender or visa office?

Each recipient sets its own rule, so read the request.

  • Landlords and property managers usually want the latest one to three statements to see income landing and rent-sized money in the account. Our guide to bank statements for an apartment rental covers what they look for and what you can black out.
  • Mortgage lenders follow investor rules. Fannie Mae's Selling Guide section on depository accounts refers to bank statements "typically covering the most recent two months". If your application drags on, expect to be asked for the newer statement when it posts. See bank statements for a loan application.
  • Visa and immigration offices often specify a number of months and a maximum age for the latest statement, and some want the bank's stamp or a signed letter. The details vary by country and visa type; our visa application statement guide walks through the usual requirements.

When the request includes a phrase like "dated within 30 days", check the closing date on your latest statement. If it is too old by the time you apply, you'll need a mid-cycle document from the next section.

How do you get your latest statement online?

The steps depend on the bank, but the pattern is the same: sign in, find the statements area, choose the account and the most recent period, and download the PDF.

At two large banks, the official pages (read on 26 October 2026) put it this way:

  • Chase. On chase.com, the paperless statements page says to click the Main Menu icon and choose Statements & documents. In the Chase Mobile app it is under Profile & Settings, then Statements & documents in the Document manager, then the account and year. Depending on the account type, up to seven years are available.
  • Bank of America. Its tax preparation FAQ points to Online Banking, selecting the account, and the Statements & Documents tab, where up to 18 months of statements can be viewed, printed and downloaded.

For other banks, look for a menu called Statements, Documents, e-Statements or Statements & Documents; our bank pages show where several US banks put theirs. Download the file; don't print the web view, which often drops headers.

How do you get a statement mid-cycle?

Banks don't issue an official statement for a period that hasn't closed yet. When you need proof of recent activity, combine your last full statement with one of these:

  1. Transaction history download. Most online banking lets you pick a date range ending today and download it as a PDF or CSV. Choose the range from the day after your last statement's closing date.
  2. Branch printout. A banker can print the current activity and, at many banks, stamp and sign it. Ask for your name and account number to be on the printout.
  3. Balance or verification letter. Ask the bank for a letter on its letterhead stating the account holder, account type, opening date and current balance. Some banks generate these online; others issue them at a branch.
  4. Interim statement. Some banks can print a statement covering part of the current cycle at a branch on request. Ask whether yours does.

When does your next statement post?

Your statement date, sometimes called the cycle date or closing date, is printed near the top of every statement as the end of the period. It is usually the same day each month, though weekends and holidays can move it by a day or two, and banks can change the cycle with notice. The PDF normally becomes available a day or a few days after that date.

Knowing it helps you time requests. If an application deadline falls three days after your closing date, wait for the new statement instead of sending one that is a month older. If your closing date doesn't suit the people who ask for statements, such as a lender who always wants the calendar month, ask the bank whether it can move the cycle; some banks allow it for deposit accounts.

What if the statement must be stamped or certified?

Requests for a "stamped", "certified" or "attested" statement need the bank to vouch for the document, so this means a branch visit or a call to the bank's service team. Take ID and the account number, say exactly which months you need, and ask the banker to stamp every page, not just the first. If the recipient wants originals, ask the bank for two sets and keep one.

What should you check before you send it?

  • The statement shows your full name and the address the recipient expects.
  • The period is the one asked for, and all pages are included.
  • The file is the PDF your bank issued, not an edited or re-saved copy. Many recipients check document properties.
  • You have redacted only what the recipient allows, if anything.
  • If the request says "latest", the closing date is after any deadline they gave.

Statements are documents to hand over as-is. If you also want to work with the transactions yourself, say to total your rent payments or check income before an application, QuickBankConvert can turn the PDF into rows in a spreadsheet; send the original to the landlord or lender, not the spreadsheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a screenshot of my banking app a current bank statement?

Rarely. Most landlords, lenders and consulates want a document that shows the bank's name, your name, the account number and a period with opening and closing balances. A screenshot shows none of that reliably and is easy to alter.

How recent does a current bank statement need to be?

There is no single rule; the person asking sets it. Many want the most recent statement the bank has issued, and some add that it must be dated within the last 30 or 90 days. Read the request, and ask if it is unclear.

Can I get a statement before my statement date?

Not an official one for the open period. You can print or download your transaction history up to today, or ask a branch for a balance letter or a stamped printout, which many recipients accept alongside the last full statement.

Why does my newest statement not show last week's deposit?

Because the statement covers a fixed cycle that ended on the closing date printed at the top. Anything after that date appears on the next statement or in your online transaction history.
