Submit Your Bank Statement to PayPal: What It Needs
Quick Answer: PayPal asks for a bank statement for one of three reasons: to prove your address, to confirm business details, or to lift a limitation. Upload it only from the Resolution Center, or from the bell icon after you log in yourself. It must be legible, show all four corners, match your PayPal details and have nothing blacked out.
When PayPal asks you to submit a bank statement, it wants a document that proves something about you: where you live, which business you run, or that a bank account is really yours. The request always appears inside your PayPal account, and the statement has to be complete and unedited, so the most useful preparation is knowing which request you are answering.

Why is PayPal asking for my bank statement?
PayPal's help pages describe several situations that lead to a document request. Working out which one applies tells you what the statement needs to show.
| Situation | What PayPal is checking | What the statement must show |
|---|---|---|
| Account limitation | Identity, address, a recent name change or business details | Whatever the Resolution Center lists, usually name and address |
| Customer Identification Program (CIP) | Name, address and date of birth, for regulatory reasons | A proof of address issued within the past 12 months |
| Business entity check | Business name, address or tax ID | Full business name, or a truncated EIN/TIN, dated within 12 months |
| Linking a bank account | That you own the account | Usually no upload; see the next section |
PayPal says it may limit an account for regulatory requirements (requesting a product like a debit card can trigger them), for possible unauthorized use, for higher-risk selling patterns such as a sudden jump in volume, or when an account has been inactive. The limitation email states the reason, and the why is my account limited page explains each one.
Linking a bank: you read the statement, you do not send it
Many people searching for this are actually trying to confirm a bank account, and that rarely involves uploading anything. PayPal's bank confirmation article describes two methods:
- Instant confirmation. Go to your Wallet, click the bank account and, if offered, sign in to your bank. PayPal uses a third-party provider to confirm the account details and check balance and transactions as needed; you can remove those permissions in Settings later.
- Two small deposits. Choose Link your bank another way, or enter the account number manually. Within 3 business days, look on your bank statement for two deposits of between $0.01 and $0.99. Then go back to Wallet, click the bank, enter the exact amounts (for example .05 and .15) and click Submit.
The deposits are temporary: if they were $0.05 and $0.15, a $0.20 debit from PayPal follows. If you only see one deposit, PayPal notes that some banks combine the two; contact PayPal or try instant linking instead. If you see none, request a resend from the bank's entry in your Wallet.
So here "check your bank statement" means reading the amounts on your bank's website or app. A current statement or the pending transactions list will show them.
What must the statement show?
PayPal's documentation guidance sets four conditions for anything you upload. The document must:
- be legible,
- show all 4 corners of the page,
- not have information blocked or blacked out, and
- match the information on your PayPal account.
For proof of address, PayPal lists a bank or credit card statement dated within the last 12 months, alongside utility and phone bills, vehicle registration, a 401(k) or brokerage statement, a deed or lease, and a current ID showing your physical address. It does not accept envelopes, invoices, receipts, waybills, or expired, partial or obscured documents. PayPal's business document guide adds that it can only confirm physical addresses, not PO boxes.
For a business, PayPal's business entity guide accepts a current bank statement showing the full business name as proof of business address, and a current bank or credit card statement showing a truncated EIN or TIN as proof of business identity, each dated within the last 12 months.
Picking the right statement
- Use the bank's own PDF, downloaded from online banking, rather than a screenshot of a transactions screen. A PDF keeps the bank's name, your name and address and the statement date in one place.
- Make sure the name matches. If your PayPal account says "Jonathan" and your bank says "Jon", or you recently married, expect PayPal to ask for name-change evidence, as its guidance warns.
- For a photo of a paper statement, lay it flat in good light with all four edges in the frame.

Can you black out parts of the statement?
This is the question people most want answered, and PayPal's answer is no. Its guidance says the document must not have information blocked or blacked out, and lists "obscured documents" among those it rejects. Covering the account number or the transactions risks a rejected upload and another review cycle.
Two practical points follow:
- The safeguard is where you upload, not what you hide. Only upload through your PayPal account. PayPal tells you to find the list of requested documents in the Resolution Center or by clicking the bell icon on your Dashboard. For identity checks, its CIP article says to log in on a web browser and go to the Confirm your Identity page or the bell icon.
- Check that the request is real. PayPal says that if you get an email about a limitation but see nothing in the Resolution Center, it may be a fake. Forward it to phishing@paypal.com and delete it; if you clicked a link or opened an attachment, review your payments and change your password.
If sending full transaction detail genuinely worries you, ask PayPal through the Message Center whether a different document from its accepted list, such as a utility bill, would satisfy the specific request.
What happens after you upload?
PayPal says that once the required steps are done, a limitation review usually takes 3 business days and it emails you the outcome. Identity documents for CIP are reviewed within about 2 business days, sometimes longer, and must be uploaded separately for each PayPal account you hold. In most cases customer service cannot lift a limitation over the phone.
If you completed every step and the account is still limited, PayPal's limitation article says either it already emailed you asking for more information, or the review is still in progress. Check the email address on your account before uploading the same file again.
A note on PayPal's own statements
This is the reverse of downloading PayPal's own activity statements, which you might need for taxes or bookkeeping. Our guide to the PayPal bank statement covers those monthly PDF and CSV downloads. If you are reconciling PayPal against the linked bank account afterwards, QuickBankConvert can turn the bank's PDF statement into CSV or Excel rows so the two lists line up; that is a bookkeeping task, separate from anything PayPal asked you to upload.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I black out my account number on a bank statement for PayPal?
PayPal's document guidance says the document must not have information blocked or blacked out, and it rejects obscured documents. If you are unsure the request is genuine, log in to PayPal directly and check the Resolution Center before uploading anything.
How old can the bank statement be for PayPal proof of address?
PayPal accepts a bank or credit card statement dated within the last 12 months as proof of address. Your name and residential address must match your PayPal account.
How long does PayPal take to review my documents?
PayPal says a limitation review usually takes 3 business days after you complete the required steps, and identity documents are reviewed within about 2 business days, sometimes longer.
Do I need to upload a bank statement to link my bank to PayPal?
Usually not. PayPal confirms a bank instantly through your bank login, or by sending two small deposits you read off your statement and enter in your Wallet.
What if PayPal emails me about a limitation that is not in my account?
PayPal says that could be a fake email. Forward it to phishing@paypal.com and delete it, and change your password if you clicked a link in it.
