Chase Download Transactions CSV: Steps and Limits

6 min readOctober 26, 2026

Quick Answer: Sign in at chase.com on a computer, open the checking or credit card account, and use the download option in the activity view. Pick the account, choose CSV as the file type, set the date range, and download. Chase says the desktop download covers the last two years; anything older exists only as PDF statements, which Chase keeps for up to seven years depending on the account.

Chase lets you download account activity, not statements, as a spreadsheet file. The CSV covers checking, savings and Chase credit cards, opens directly in Excel or Google Sheets, and reaches back about two years. For a specific statement period, or for anything older than the download window, you work from the PDF statement instead.

How do you download Chase transactions as a CSV?

The activity download lives on the desktop site, not in the Chase Mobile app. The exact button placement changes when Chase redesigns its pages, but the flow is the same:

  1. Sign in at chase.com using a computer. Chase's own help notes that the app only offers PDF versions of transactions, so the file formats below are a desktop feature.
  2. Open the account you want, either the checking account or the credit card, from the accounts overview.
  3. Find the download icon in the transactions area, usually a downward arrow above or beside the activity list.
  4. Confirm the account in the download panel. If you have several accounts, the panel lets you switch without going back.
  5. Choose the file type. Pick the spreadsheet (CSV) option for Excel and Google Sheets. The other choices are for finance software.
  6. Choose the activity range. Card accounts may offer the current or a previous statement period alongside a custom date range; either way, you can set the start and end dates yourself.
  7. Download. The CSV saves to your computer's Downloads folder. Open it in Excel or upload it to Google Sheets.

Chase lists the desktop formats as "a spreadsheet (CSV), Quicken Web Connect (QFX), Quicken or Microsoft Money (QIF), or QuickBooks Web Connect (QBO) format for the last two years" (What's Chase Spending Planner?).

If the goal is QuickBooks, the separate guide to downloading Chase transactions into QuickBooks covers the QBO route in more detail.

What's in a Chase CSV file?

The first row is a header, then one row per transaction. Chase checking files carry columns along the lines of a posting date, the description, the amount, a transaction type, the running balance and a check or slip number. Credit card files instead show the transaction date and the post date, the description, a category, a type such as sale or payment, and the amount.

A few things to know before you start building formulas:

  • Signs. Money out is negative. On a card file, purchases are negative and your payments to the card are positive. That suits most accounting imports, but if you want a spending total in Excel you may want to flip the sign with =-E2.
  • Two dates on card files. The transaction date is when you bought something; the post date is when it hit the account. Use the post date if you are matching a statement period, because the statement is cut by posting.
  • Pending items are generally left out. The download is built from posted activity. A purchase still marked pending on the website will not be in the file yet.
  • Categories are Chase's. The card file's category column is the issuer's label, useful for a quick summary but not the same as a chart of accounts.

Open the file once and read the header row before you rely on any of this, since column names can change.

Can you export a Chase statement to Excel?

Yes, in two senses. The activity CSV is already an Excel-ready file: double-click it and Excel opens it as a sheet. To keep it as a workbook, choose File > Save As and pick Excel Workbook (.xlsx), otherwise your formatting and formulas are lost the next time you open the CSV.

Opening a CSV by double-click lets Excel guess each column's type. If dates come in as text or long numbers lose precision, use Data > From Text/CSV instead, which shows a preview and lets you set the type for each column before loading. Microsoft's Excel support pages document both routes.

What Chase does not offer is a spreadsheet version of the monthly statement itself. The statement is a PDF with its own opening balance, closing balance, fees and interest summary. If you need the rows from a particular statement period rather than an activity date range, the closest match is a custom date range from the day after the last statement's closing date to this statement's closing date. That works inside the two-year window. Older periods need a different approach.

How far back can you download Chase transactions?

Two different limits apply, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion:

  • Activity downloads (CSV, QFX, QIF, QBO) cover the last two years on the desktop site, according to Chase. The Chase Mobile app offers PDF versions of transactions for the last calendar year.
  • Statements go back further. Chase's paperless page says that depending on the account type you can access up to seven years of statements, found under Statements & documents in the main menu on chase.com, or under Profile & Settings in the app (Chase paperless statements).

So for three to seven years ago you will find PDFs, but no CSV. For tax years, audits, loan files or a bookkeeping catch-up that reaches past the two-year mark, the statement PDFs are the record.

Getting older Chase statements into a spreadsheet

You have three realistic options for statements outside the download window:

  1. Retype them. Fine for one short statement, error-prone for a year of a busy account.
  2. Excel's Get Data from PDF (in Microsoft 365 for Windows) or Adobe Acrobat's export to Excel. Both read the tables on each page; expect to clean up wrapped descriptions, repeated headers and the summary boxes.
  3. A bank statement converter. QuickBankConvert reads bank statement PDFs into one row per transaction with date, description, category and a signed amount, and shows the opening and closing balance it found so you can check the result against the PDF. Without an account you can preview one statement on screen; a free account adds CSV and Excel downloads for a few statements a month, and pricing lists the larger plans.

The Chase bank page goes into the layout of Chase checking statements, and there is a separate walkthrough for Chase credit card statements to CSV. For files within the last two years, Chase's own CSV is the better choice: it is free and comes straight from the bank's records.

When the download button is missing or the file is empty

  • Using the app. Switch to chase.com on a computer; the app does not offer the CSV.
  • Business accounts. Chase business and commercial online banking have their own activity screens with different menu wording; the download still lives near the activity list.
  • Date range outside the window. A range starting more than two years ago returns only the part Chase still holds.
  • No posted activity. A new card with only pending charges produces a file with a header row and nothing else.
  • Excel shows one column. The file opened with the wrong delimiter. Import it through Data > From Text/CSV and choose comma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download Chase transactions as a CSV from the mobile app?

No. Chase says the app offers PDF versions of transactions for the last calendar year; the CSV, QFX, QIF and QBO downloads are on the desktop site.

How many years of transactions can I download from Chase?

Chase describes the desktop download as covering the last two years. Statements go back further, up to seven years depending on the account, but only as PDFs.

Is a Chase CSV the same as my monthly statement?

No. The CSV lists posted activity for the dates you choose, without the statement’s balance summary, fees section or interest details. Match a statement by using its period dates as the custom range.

Why are Chase credit card purchases negative in the CSV?

Chase’s card file records purchases as money out and payments as money in. Multiply the amount column by -1 if you want spending as positive numbers.

How do I get a Chase statement older than two years into Excel?

Download the PDF from Statements & documents, then use Excel’s Get Data from PDF, Adobe Acrobat’s export, or a bank statement converter, and check the totals against the PDF.
