Bank of America Export Transactions to CSV or Excel
Quick Answer: Sign in to Bank of America Online Banking on a computer, open the account's activity, choose Download, set the period, pick the Microsoft Excel (CSV) file type and download it. The CSV opens in Excel, but checking and savings files start with a few summary rows you delete before sorting. Activity downloads cover recent history only; for cards Bank of America says up to 12 months, and older periods exist as PDF statements.
Bank of America exports account activity, not statements, as a spreadsheet. You get a comma-separated file of posted transactions for the dates you pick, which Excel opens directly. The monthly statement stays a PDF, and the bank keeps those much longer than the activity download reaches, so older history means working from statements rather than exports.

How do you export Bank of America transactions?
Bank of America's help pages confirm you can "download transactions for use with financial management software" from Online Banking. The menus move occasionally, so treat the labels below as a guide:
- Sign in at bankofamerica.com on a desktop or laptop. File downloads are easiest to find on the full website rather than in the app.
- Select the account from your accounts overview to open its transaction activity.
- Choose Download. The link sits with the activity list for that account.
- Pick the period. Choose a statement period or set a custom date range, depending on what the account offers.
- Pick the file type. For a spreadsheet, choose the Microsoft Excel format, which saves as a .csv file. Quicken and QuickBooks options are listed alongside it.
- Download transactions. The file lands in your computer's Downloads folder.
- Open it in Excel or Google Sheets, then save a copy as .xlsx if you plan to add formulas.
For a business account, Bank of America's small business help notes that QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop 2018 or later is needed for its QuickBooks download, and that Web Connect lets you download transactions from Online Banking and bring them into QuickBooks Desktop (QuickBooks help from Bank of America). The Bank of America QBO file guide goes through that route.
What does the Bank of America CSV format look like?
The file is plain text with commas between fields. A checking or savings export usually opens with a short summary block, a blank row, and then the transaction table:
| Part of the file | What it holds | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Summary rows at the top | Account description, beginning balance, total credits, total debits, ending balance for the period | Copy the balances somewhere for checking, then delete these rows |
| Header row | Column names such as Date, Description, Amount and Running Bal. | Keep it as row 1 |
| Transaction rows | One posted transaction per row | Your data |
A few details matter once the summary rows are gone:
- One signed amount column. Deposits are positive and withdrawals negative, so a plain
=SUM()of the Amount column gives the net change for the period. - Running balance. The balance column lets you confirm nothing is missing: the last running balance should equal the ending balance from the summary block.
- Descriptions are long. Card purchases, transfers and Zelle payments come with reference text and merchant locations. They are fine for searching but awkward for pivot tables until you shorten them.
- Credit card exports differ. Card files skip the summary block and use their own columns, typically a posted date, a reference number, the payee and the amount.
Always look at the header row of your own download; the bank can change column names without notice.
How do you export a Bank of America statement to Excel cleanly?
Double-clicking the CSV works, but the summary block on top breaks sorting and filtering because Excel treats it as part of the data. The two-minute clean-up:
- Open the CSV in Excel.
- Note the beginning and ending balance from the top rows, then select those rows down to the blank line and delete them, so the header row becomes row 1.
- Select the table and press Ctrl+T to make it an Excel table with filter buttons.
- Check that the Date column is right-aligned. Left-aligned dates are text; use Data > Text to Columns on that column and choose the MDY date format to convert them.
- Add a total row and confirm the sum of Amount equals ending balance minus beginning balance.
- Save as Excel Workbook (.xlsx).
For a file you refresh every month, Data > From Text/CSV in Excel lets you skip the top rows in Power Query once and repeat the same steps on the next file. Microsoft's Excel support site documents both the import and the table tools.
How far back can you export Bank of America transactions?
This is where the activity export and statements part ways. Bank of America publishes these figures on its own help pages:
| Record | What Bank of America says | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card transaction detail | Request up to 12 months of detailed transaction information | Download for financial software, or on screen |
| Credit card statements | View and print up to 3 years | |
| Paperless deposit statements | View, print and download up to 18 months, with check images | |
| Older statement copies | Order copies up to 7 years old from Statements & Documents | PDF, delivered online |
The figures come from Bank of America's credit card account FAQ and its tax preparation FAQ. The bank does not state a single download window for checking activity on those pages, so check what the date picker allows on your account; anything it will not reach has to come from a statement.
Ordered copies arrive online rather than by post: the bank's digital banking page says you request them from Statements & Documents under the Accounts tab, and electronic copies are available 24 to 36 hours after the request and stay accessible for 7 days. Download them as soon as they appear.
Getting older Bank of America statements into a spreadsheet
Once a period falls outside the export window, you have a PDF statement and need rows. Choices, roughly from least to most effort per statement:
- A statement converter. QuickBankConvert turns a statement PDF into dated, signed rows and reports the opening and closing balance next to the preview, which you can check against the PDF's summary box before downloading CSV or Excel. A free account covers a few statements a month; heavier catch-up work is on the paid plans at pricing.
- Excel's Get Data from PDF in Microsoft 365 for Windows. It finds the tables on each page; expect to merge pages and remove headers.
- Adobe Acrobat's export to Excel. Good for a one-off, with similar clean-up.
- Typing it in. Reasonable for a statement with a dozen lines.
The Bank of America bank page describes how its statements are laid out, and the existing walkthrough on converting a Bank of America statement to Excel covers the PDF route in detail. While a period is still inside the download window, the bank's own CSV is the better source: it costs nothing and comes from the bank's records rather than a reading of the page.
Common snags with the export
- Pending transactions are not in the file until they post. Download again after a few days if the latest items are missing.
- Overlapping downloads. Two exports with overlapping dates duplicate rows when you combine them. Sort by date and remove duplicates, or download by statement period.
- Excel opens everything in one column. Your system's list separator is not a comma. Import through Data > From Text/CSV and choose comma.
- Leading zeros lost in check numbers or reference fields. Set those columns to Text during the import.
- Totals don't tie. If the sum of amounts does not equal the change in balance, a row is missing or the summary block was summed by mistake.
