BMO Financial Statements and Other Banks' Annual Reports

6 min readOctober 29, 2026

Quick Answer: "BMO financial statements" usually means Bank of Montreal's own audited accounts, which it publishes in its annual report and files with the SEC each year as a Form 40-F. Every listed bank does the same: the annual report on its investor relations site, plus a copy with its securities regulator. If you wanted the statement for your own BMO account, that's a different document, found in BMO online banking.

A bank's financial statements are its own balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement and notes, published once a year in the annual report and summarized each quarter. They describe the bank as a company. They are not the monthly statement a customer gets. You find them on the bank's investor relations pages and in regulatory filings such as SEC EDGAR or Companies House.

Where to find financial statements for the banks people search for

Each bank below was checked on its own site or in a public filing register in October 2026.

Bank of Montreal (BMO). BMO's investor relations site did not load for us today, so use the filing record: BMO files its annual report with the U.S. SEC as a Form 40-F on EDGAR, under the name "BANK OF MONTREAL /CAN/". The list runs from the December 2025 filing back to 2002, so "bank of montreal balance sheet" for any recent year is a 40-F away. Canadian filings also go to SEDAR+, the Canadian securities filing system.

CIBC. CIBC's quarterly results page is organized by year, from 2026 back to 2005. The Q4 financial reports for each year include the "Full annual report" PDF, a news release and Supplementary Financial Information in PDF and Excel. So "cibc financial statements 2020" or "2022" means opening that year's Q4 block. The Excel supplement is the quickest way to get CIBC's figures into a spreadsheet.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA, CommBank). CBA's results page lists the Annual Report, profit announcement and results presentation for each full year and half year, plus a "Historical Annual Reports" section. CBA's year ends 30 June: the latest Pillar 3 capital disclosure on that page is dated 30 June 2026. The same documents are lodged as ASX market announcements, searchable by company code.

ANZ. ANZ's annual report page has the 2025 Annual Report for ANZ Group Holdings, a separate 2025 Annual Report for the banking entity (ANZBGL), and an archive that ANZ says goes back to 1969.

Lloyds Banking Group. Lloyds' investor site returned an error page today. Its accounts are also on file at Companies House, which lists the company as LLOYDS BANKING GROUP PLC, number SC095000. Open the filing history and filter by Accounts to get the annual accounts as PDFs.

Monzo. Monzo publishes its annual report as a "Year in review" page on monzo.com. The 2026 edition reports revenue of £1.7bn for FY2026, up from £1.2bn in FY2025, with a revenue chart back to FY2022 split by source: current account balances, borrowing, payments, wealth, and subscriptions and fees.

Banco Santander. Santander's financial and economic information page carries quarterly shareholder reports, the Annual Report by year and the Pillar 3 report. Santander notes that from 2021 the official version is the consolidated annual financial report in the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF).

East West Bank. East West Bancorp's investor site has quarterly press releases and earnings presentations by year, and an Annual Reports & Proxy section. As a U.S. company it files a 10-K with the SEC. EDGAR lists its fiscal year end as December 31, with 10-Ks back to 1999.

Fidelity Bank. Several banks use this name. Fidelity Bank Plc in Nigeria posts its statements on its investor relations page under Financial Records. For a U.S. bank called Fidelity, look for its holding company's 10-K on EDGAR, or its regulatory call reports if it is not publicly listed.

How do you read a bank's balance sheet?

A bank's balance sheet reads backwards compared with an ordinary company's, because money flows the other way. When you deposit money, the bank owes it to you, so customer deposits are a liability. When the bank lends money, it expects to be repaid, so loans are an asset.

Fidelity Bank's Q1 2026 highlights show the pattern: customer deposits of ₦7.4 trillion, net loans of ₦4.7 trillion and total assets of ₦11.4 trillion. Deposits fund most of the bank, and loans are its largest earning asset.

The main lines, roughly in the order you'll see them:

  • Cash and balances with central banks. Liquid money the bank holds.
  • Securities. Government and corporate bonds the bank owns, often split by how they are valued.
  • Loans and advances to customers, net of allowance. "Net" means after deducting the allowance for expected credit losses, the bank's estimate of loans that won't be repaid.
  • Deposits. From customers and from other banks, usually the largest liability.
  • Debt issued. Bonds the bank has sold to fund itself, including covered bonds.
  • Equity. Shareholders' capital plus retained earnings. It is thin relative to assets, which is why capital ratios get so much attention.

If you want to lay a bank's figures out yourself, a balance sheet template in Excel gives you a structure to fill in.

What matters in a bank's income statement?

Banks earn most of their money from the gap between what they earn on loans and what they pay on deposits and debt.

  1. Net interest income. Interest earned minus interest paid. This is the core of the "commbank income statement" or any retail bank's results.
  2. Non-interest income. Fees, card income, wealth management, trading.
  3. Operating expenses. Staff, technology, property. Banks often quote a cost-to-income ratio. Fidelity Bank shows a CIR of 52.90% in its Q1 2026 highlights, meaning just over half of income went on costs.
  4. Provision for credit losses (or "loan impairment charge"). The amount set aside this period for loans expected to go bad. It rises sharply in downturns and is the line analysts watch first.
  5. Profit before and after tax.

Capital ratios and CET1

A bank's own statements are only half the story. Regulators also require capital disclosures, often in a separate Pillar 3 report (CBA, CIBC and Santander all publish one next to their results). The headline figure is the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio: the bank's highest-quality capital, mainly common shares and retained earnings, divided by its risk-weighted assets. A higher ratio means more loss-absorbing capacity. The minimums come from the Basel Committee's Basel III framework, which national regulators apply with their own buffers on top.

Finding older years

For years like 2020 or 2022:

  • Investor relations archives usually keep several years of annual reports. CIBC's goes back to 2005 and ANZ's to 1969.
  • Regulatory filings are permanent. EDGAR holds BMO's 40-Fs and East West's 10-Ks for each year, Companies House keeps UK accounts, and ASX keeps announcements.
  • Restatements. A later report may restate a prior year's figures after an accounting change. When you compare years, take both from the newest report that shows them.

Understanding a bank's accounts is accounting rather than bookkeeping. The bookkeeping vs accounting guide explains where that line falls. If what you actually need is to analyze your own transactions, a statement converter turns account statement PDFs into spreadsheet rows; it is not for annual reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I download Bank of Montreal's financial statements?

BMO's annual report, with its audited financial statements, is filed with the SEC each year as a Form 40-F, which you can download free from EDGAR.

Why are deposits a liability on a bank's balance sheet?

Because the bank owes that money back to its customers. Loans work the other way: they are money owed to the bank, so they are assets.

What is CET1 in a bank's annual report?

Common Equity Tier 1 is the bank's highest-quality capital, mainly common shares and retained earnings, measured against its risk-weighted assets. It is usually reported in the capital section and the Pillar 3 report.

How do I find CIBC's financial statements for 2020 or 2022?

On CIBC's quarterly results page, open the year and look in the Q4 financial reports, which include the full annual report and supplementary financial information.

Is a bank's financial statement the same as my bank statement?

No. The bank's financial statements describe the company's own finances for investors; your bank statement lists your account's transactions and comes from online banking.
