Bank of America Mortgage Interest Statement (Form 1098)

6 min readOctober 26, 2026

Quick Answer: Your mortgage interest statement is IRS Form 1098, which your servicer sends early each year showing the mortgage interest it received from you in the previous year. At Bank of America you download it from Online Banking: select the mortgage, open the Statements & Documents tab and look in the Year-end Statements section. Wells Fargo puts it under Statements & Docs, then Tax Documents. Fifth Third, Huntington and M&T post tax documents in their online banking too.

The mortgage interest statement your lender sends each January is Form 1098, an IRS information return. It reports what you paid the servicer during the year, chiefly interest, and the IRS gets a copy. It is not a monthly statement and it is not a bill. Knowing where your bank keeps it, and how its numbers tie back to your December statement, saves a scramble at tax time.

What is a mortgage interest statement?

Under the IRS Instructions for Form 1098, anyone in a trade or business who receives $600 or more of mortgage interest from an individual on one mortgage during the year must file the form, and must give a statement to the payer of record. The $600 test applies to each mortgage separately. Banks and mortgage servicers are the usual filers, which is why the form comes from whoever services your loan, even if another company owns it.

The form itself is short. Its boxes, as named in the IRS instructions:

BoxNameWhat it tells you
1Mortgage interest received from payer(s)/borrower(s)Interest the servicer received during the year
2Outstanding mortgage principalThe principal balance used for reporting, typically as of 1 January
3Mortgage origination dateWhen the loan started
4Refund of overpaid interestInterest from an earlier year refunded to you this year
5Mortgage insurance premiumsPremiums paid on the loan, where reported
6Points paid on purchase of principal residencePoints reported for the purchase
7Address of property securing mortgage (checkbox)Whether the property address is the same as your mailing address
8Address or description of property securing mortgageThe property, if box 7 isn't checked
9Number of mortgaged propertiesMore than one property securing the loan
10OtherOptional items such as real estate taxes paid from escrow
11Mortgage acquisition dateWhen the servicer acquired the loan, if it did so during the year

Whether and how any of these amounts belong on your return is a question for your tax software or preparer. This guide covers finding the form and checking it against your records.

Where do you download it from your bank?

Bank of America

Bank of America's tax preparation FAQ, read on 26 October 2026, says that if you meet the guidelines for receiving a 1098, you log in to Online Banking, select your mortgage account, then the Statements & Documents tab, where the form appears in the Year-end Statements section. The same page says tax forms are mailed by the end of January and should arrive by mid-February.

Wells Fargo

The Wells Fargo tax center, read the same day, gives two routes:

  1. Wells Fargo Online: sign on, select Accounts in the main navigation, choose Statements & Docs, select Tax Documents, then pick the account, document type and tax year.
  2. Wells Fargo Mobile app: sign on, select Menu, tap Statements & Documents, choose Tax Documents, then the account and year.

Wells Fargo says it mails original tax documents no later than January 31 and that up to seven years of tax documents are available online.

Fifth Third, Huntington and M&T

We couldn't load current help pages for Fifth Third, Huntington or M&T Bank to quote their menu names. All three issue Form 1098 to mortgage borrowers who meet the IRS threshold. Sign in to the bank's online banking, open the mortgage account and look for a statements, documents or tax documents section; if the form isn't there by early February, call the mortgage servicing number on your monthly statement and ask for a copy by mail or a reprint.

How does the 1098 relate to your monthly statements?

Monthly mortgage statements show the year-to-date split of your payments into principal, interest and escrow. The December statement, or the January statement that covers the December payment, should show total interest received for the year, and that figure should match box 1. When it doesn't, the reason is almost always one of these:

  • Year-end timing. A payment you sent on 30 December may have been received in January. Servicers report interest by the date they received it.
  • A servicing transfer. If the loan moved to a new servicer during the year, each one issues its own 1098 for its months. Box 11 on the new servicer's form gives the date it acquired the loan.
  • A refinance. The old loan and the new loan get separate forms, and points paid on a refinance may be reported differently from purchase points.
  • A refund. Interest returned to you shows in box 4 and relates to an earlier year.
  • Escrow items. Property tax and insurance paid from escrow are not interest. Some servicers show taxes in box 10; others leave the box empty and list escrow disbursements on the annual escrow statement.

How do you check the form against your own records?

  1. Download the 1098 and the last monthly statement of the year as PDFs.
  2. Compare box 1 with year-to-date interest on the statement.
  3. Add up the payments that left your bank account to the servicer during the year. If you pay from a checking account, the bank statements are the independent record.
  4. If the totals don't line up after allowing for the timing items above, ask the servicer for a payment history for the year.

Step 3 is quicker with the bank statements in a spreadsheet. QuickBankConvert converts statement PDFs into rows with date, description and signed amount, so you can filter for the mortgage payee and total the year. A free account downloads CSV or Excel; the pricing page has the limits.

What if the form is missing or wrong?

A missing 1098 is usually a delivery problem. Check the online documents area first, then your paperless settings, then the mailing address the servicer has on file. If the loan was sold or transferred during the year, you may need to sign in to the previous servicer's site as well, since it reports the months it handled.

An error is different. If box 1 looks wrong after you have ruled out timing and transfers, contact the servicer and ask for a corrected form, and keep a note of the date you asked. A corrected 1098 replaces the original for both you and the IRS. Points, the property address and the acquisition date are other fields worth a glance, because they are entered once and carried forward; a mistake at origination can repeat every year.

If you co-own the property with someone who isn't on the loan, or the 1098 names only one of two borrowers, that is a reporting detail to raise with your preparer rather than something the servicer will change.

Where should you keep it?

Save the 1098 with your return for the year and the December mortgage statement. Because mortgage records also relate to property you own, keep them as long as you keep records for the house; our guide on how long to keep bank statements for taxes explains the IRS's property rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will my mortgage interest statement be available?

Lenders send Form 1098 early in the year for the previous year. Bank of America says its tax forms are mailed by the end of January and should arrive by mid-February; Wells Fargo says it mails original tax documents no later than January 31.

Why did I get two Form 1098s for one house?

Usually because the loan's servicing was transferred during the year, or because you refinanced. Each servicer reports only the interest it received, so add the two together and keep both forms.

I paid less than $600 in interest. Will I get a 1098?

The IRS requirement to file Form 1098 applies when a lender receives $600 or more of mortgage interest on one mortgage. Below that, a lender may not issue one, but your December statement still shows interest paid for the year.

Is the 1098 the same as my year-end escrow statement?

No. The 1098 reports interest, points, mortgage insurance premiums and some other amounts to you and the IRS. The escrow statement explains the taxes and insurance paid from your escrow account and how next year's payment was set.
