Chase Bank Dispute a Charge: Online, Phone and Timing

6 min readOctober 27, 2026

Quick Answer: Sign in to chase.com or the Chase Mobile app, open the card or checking account, tap the transaction, choose Report a problem, pick the reason and submit the form. Chase asks you to file within 60 days of the charge first appearing on your statement and says disputes can take up to 90 days. You can also call 1-800-955-9060 for personal credit cards or 1-866-564-2262 for debit cards.

Chase handles a disputed charge the same basic way on credit cards and checking accounts: you report it from the transaction itself, choose a reason, and Chase investigates. What changes between the two is the law behind it, how pending charges are treated, and what happens to your money while you wait. This page follows Chase's own help pages, read on 27 October 2026.

If you want the issuer-neutral rules first, including how to write a formal billing error letter, the general guide to disputing a credit card charge covers them. Everything below is specific to Chase.

Before you file: is it fraud or a charge error?

Chase sorts problems into two buckets, and the bucket decides which path you take.

  • Fraud is, in Chase's words, a transaction that wasn't made by you or anyone authorized to use your account. You report fraud rather than dispute it, and Chase has a separate "report a transaction" flow for it.
  • A charge error is a purchase you did make that went wrong. Chase's examples include a subscription you cancelled, a product you never received, a return that was never credited, an overcharge, a service you were unhappy with, and a duplicate charge.

If you are not sure whether a line is fraud, open it first. Chase's instructions page says selecting the arrow beside a transaction shows the merchant's name, phone number and your past activity with that merchant. A charge you do not recognize often turns out to be a company billing under a parent name. The guide to spotting fraud on a statement lists the patterns worth checking.

Should you call the merchant first?

Chase recommends it, and says merchants can often fix a mistake faster than a bank investigation. If you do contact them, Chase asks you to note the date you contacted them, who you spoke with and what they said. Those notes become part of your dispute if the merchant does not fix it. Skip this step for genuine fraud.

How to dispute a charge on chase.com

Chase's step-by-step help for disputing a transaction reads like this:

  1. Sign in at chase.com.
  2. Select the card or checking account that contains the transaction.
  3. Tap the transaction and select Report a problem.
  4. Choose the reason for your dispute.
  5. Fill out the dispute form with more details.
  6. Review your request and select Submit dispute.

The same idea applies in the Chase Mobile app: start from the transaction, not from a general contact form. The reason you pick matters, because it decides which questions the form asks next and what evidence Chase will want, such as a cancellation confirmation for a subscription or tracking for an item that never arrived.

How to track a Chase dispute

Once submitted, Chase shows every open and closed dispute in one list:

  1. Sign in at chase.com and go to the account that holds the transaction.
  2. Select the three-dot icon (More options).
  3. Choose Account Services, then Track Disputes.
  4. Select View details on any dispute for its status.

Check here before calling. If Chase has asked you for documents, the request and its deadline usually show up in the dispute record and in your messages.

Chase dispute phone numbers

Chase's dispute page lists three lines:

Card typeNumber
Personal credit card disputes1-800-955-9060
Debit card disputes1-866-564-2262
Business credit card disputes1-888-269-8690

Calling is the better choice when the transaction does not show a dispute option, when you need to dispute a pending debit card charge, or when several related charges need to be handled together.

Credit card vs debit card disputes at Chase

The flow looks identical, but what happens to your money is different.

Chase credit cardChase debit card

Timing Chase givesPending credit posts in 1 to 3 business daysProvisional credit usually within 48 hours, up to 10 business days
ResolutionUp to 90 daysUp to 90 days

The debit side is worth understanding in detail. Under Regulation E, a bank that cannot finish its investigation within 10 business days may take up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale debit card transactions, but only if it provisionally credits your account within those first 10 business days. Chase's "usually within 48 hours" is its own practice inside that legal limit. If Chase decides against you, the provisional credit can be reversed, so treat it as temporary until the dispute closes.

How long do you have to dispute a Chase charge?

Chase's dispute page asks you to submit within 60 days of the transaction first appearing on your statement. That matches the federal notice windows for both card types: for credit cards, a billing error notice must reach the issuer within 60 days after the statement showing it was sent; for debit, Regulation E uses 60 days after the periodic statement.

Two practical notes:

  • The clock starts at the statement, not the purchase. A charge made on the 2nd that posted on a statement closing on the 20th is measured from that statement.
  • For the strongest legal protection on a credit card, also write. Chase's instructions page says that to preserve your billing rights you can write to Customer Service, PO Box 15299, Wilmington, DE 19850-5299, and points to the billing rights notice in your Cardmember Agreement and on the back of your statement. The online form is usually enough, but a letter is the safe step for a large or disputed-again charge.

What is a Chase credit card charge back?

"Chargeback" is the network-side name for what happens after you dispute. When Chase accepts your dispute, it pulls the money back from the merchant's bank through Visa or Mastercard. The merchant can respond with evidence, which is why an investigation takes weeks rather than days. You never file a chargeback directly; the dispute is the request.

Gathering what Chase will ask for

Have these ready before you start the form, so you can finish it in one sitting:

  • The posting date, amount and merchant name as Chase prints them.
  • Your receipt, order confirmation or contract.
  • Cancellation or return confirmation, with dates.
  • Your notes or emails with the merchant.
  • Tracking or delivery records for goods.

If the problem repeats every month, such as a subscription that kept billing after you cancelled, it helps to list every occurrence. Chase lets you download transactions as CSV for recent activity. For older months that are only available as PDF statements, QuickBankConvert can turn those statements into spreadsheet rows so you can filter by merchant and total the charges. The Chase bank page has more on converting Chase statements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dispute a pending charge with Chase?

Not online for a credit card: Chase says to wait until the charge posts. For a Chase debit card, Chase's dispute page says you can call 1-866-564-2262 to start a dispute on a pending transaction.

How long does a Chase dispute take?

Chase's dispute page says resolution can take up to 90 days for credit card and debit card disputes. Many merchant-side fixes are faster if you reach the merchant first.

Do I have to pay the disputed amount on my Chase credit card?

Chase says the disputed amount is removed from what you are required to pay while the dispute is open, so you only need to cover the minimum on the undisputed balance. Keep paying that on time.

What is a Chase credit card chargeback?

It is the reversal Chase requests from the merchant's bank through the card network after you dispute a charge. You do not file a chargeback separately; filing the dispute starts it.

Is a fraud claim the same as a dispute at Chase?

No. Chase treats a transaction made by someone you did not authorize as fraud, which has its own reporting path, and a purchase you made that went wrong (wrong amount, never delivered, cancelled subscription) as a charge error dispute.
