Citibank Export Transactions: Formats and Steps
Quick Answer: To export Citibank transactions, sign in at citi.com, click the account name on your Account Homepage to open Account Details, filter the transactions, and use the export or Download Transactions option. Citi's help answers list five export formats: Quicken (QFX), OFX/Microsoft Money, CSV, QuickBooks (QBO) and TXT. For months the export doesn't reach, download the statement PDFs instead.
Citibank lets you export account and card activity from the Account Details page in citi.com: open the account, set the filters for the period you want, and export the transactions as CSV for Excel, QFX for Quicken, QBO for QuickBooks, OFX for Microsoft Money, or plain TXT. Statements are a separate download, kept on the Account Statements page, with older ones available by request.

Where is the export option in Citi Online?
Citi's own help answers, which you can read by opening the How can we help? search panel on citi.com and searching "download transactions", describe the export as living on the account's detail page rather than in a separate downloads area:
- "On your Account Homepage, click into the account name which will take you to the Account Details page where you can export your transactions and use the filters to change which transactions display at the bottom half of the page."
- Recent transactions sit in the bottom half of Account Details, and Citi says the filters let you view them "by category, time period and cardmember in Spend Summary."
So the sequence on the desktop site is:
- Sign in at citi.com.
- On the Account Homepage, click the name of the checking, savings or credit card account.
- On Account Details, scroll to the transaction list and set the filters: the time period first, then category or cardmember if you only want part of the activity.
- Choose the export or download option and pick a format.
- Save the file, and open it to check that the first and last dates are the ones you asked for.
The filters do double duty. Whatever you narrow the list to is what you are looking at, so if you filtered to one cardmember to check their spending, clear that filter before exporting the full month.
On a card account, Citi's Quicken instructions describe a slightly different control: on Account Details, "select the statement ending date that you would like to download and click on the Download Transactions link," then choose the format. That route exports one statement period at a time, which is handy when you want the export to line up exactly with a statement.
Which file formats can you export from Citibank?
Citi's answer to "What formats can I download my transactions in?" lists five. Each one suits a different destination:
| Format | Opens in | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| CSV | Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, most budgeting tools | You want to sort, filter, total or pivot the transactions yourself |
| TXT | Any text editor or a spreadsheet's text import | A tool asks for a delimited text file rather than CSV |
| QFX | Quicken | You keep a Quicken register and want Quicken to match duplicates |
| QBO | QuickBooks, through its Web Connect import | You're adding the account's activity to a QuickBooks company file |
| OFX | Microsoft Money and other OFX readers | An older finance program or a niche app expects OFX |
Two practical notes on the spreadsheet formats. A CSV export usually carries less than the screen shows: expect columns for date, description and amount, possibly debit and credit as separate columns, and little else. And a CSV has no running balance check built in, so if you are reconciling, compare the export's net total with the change in balance shown on the statement for the same dates.
Can you send Citi transactions straight to Quicken or QuickBooks?
Yes, in two ways that Citi describes.
Web Connect files. Citi's help explains that Web Connect is a QuickBooks and Quicken feature for importing .QBO or .QFX files, and calls it "easier, faster and more accurate than downloading .QIF or .CSV files, because Web Connect keeps track of transactions that have already been imported." That duplicate tracking is the main reason to choose QBO or QFX over CSV when the destination is one of those programs. Citi adds that Quicken will set up the account automatically the first time you import a QFX downloaded from Citi Online.
Direct download from inside Quicken. For credit cards, Citi's steps are: open Quicken, go to online services, select the account you've already set up, click Update/Send and enter your citi.com password, after which Quicken connects to Citi and pulls the transactions. To switch an existing Quicken account to online access, Citi says to run a One-Step Update, open the account, choose Edit Account, select Citi Cards from the list of financial institutions and enable online access.
QuickBooks Online users have a third option, the bank feed inside QuickBooks itself, which pulls transactions without any file. When it works for your account, it is the easiest choice for ongoing bookkeeping. Files are still useful for catching up on a period before the feed was connected, or when a feed disconnects and leaves a gap. If you are importing a QBO file and QuickBooks rejects it, the QBO file checker will tell you what's wrong with the file. For the import steps on the QuickBooks side, see the QuickBooks integration page.
How far back does a Citibank export go?
Citi's help answers describe the transaction list as showing "recent transactions" and do not publish a fixed date limit for exports. In practice, the period filter shows you what's reachable for your account: if the earliest date it offers doesn't reach the months you need, the export won't either.
Statements reach much further. For credit cards, Citi's paperless statements page says the last 12 months can be downloaded immediately and statements stay available online for up to 7 years. Anything older than 12 months is requested from the Request Older Statements section of the Account Statements page, and Citi's request guide says those requests take 48 to 72 hours. The Citi credit card statement download guide walks through that request process for cards.
Two other Citi details worth knowing when you are collecting records:
- No activity, no statement. Citi says it does not create a credit card statement for a month with a zero balance or no activity, so a gap in your card statements may not be missing data.
- Notices expire sooner. E-Communications in the Statements & Communications Center are kept for at least 12 months from the date they first appear, and Citi suggests saving anything you want to keep longer.
When is the statement PDF the only record?
The export is a convenience; the statement is the record. You end up working from PDFs when:
- The months are older than the export reaches. Requested older statements arrive as documents, not transaction files.
- Someone needs proof. Lenders, landlords and auditors want the bank's statement, with your name, account number and the statement period printed on it. A CSV you exported can be edited, so it carries no weight with them.
- You need the balances. The export lists transactions; the statement prints the opening and closing balance, interest and fees for the period, which is what you reconcile against.
- You are closing the account. Save every statement you might need before you close it. The copies on your own drive are the ones you control, whatever happens to online access afterwards.
For a stack of Citi statement PDFs, you can retype the rows, try Excel's built-in PDF import under Get Data (it handles some layouts better than others), or upload them to QuickBankConvert, which reads each statement into date, description, category and signed amount columns and shows the statement period and balances above the preview. The Citibank statement converter page covers Citi layouts, and converting a Citibank checking statement to Excel goes through a checking statement specifically. A free account downloads CSV or Excel for 3 statements a month; pricing lists the plans that add QBO and QFX files.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export Citibank transactions to Excel?
Yes. Export from the Account Details page in CSV format, which opens directly in Excel or Google Sheets. TXT is also offered if a tool needs a delimited text file.
Does Citi still support Quicken and QuickBooks downloads?
Citi's help lists QFX for Quicken and QBO for QuickBooks among the export formats, and describes Quicken's direct download through online services using your citi.com password.
Why is a Citi credit card statement missing for one month?
Citi says it does not create a credit card statement when the card has a zero balance or no activity, so that month simply has no statement.
How do I get Citibank transactions older than the export shows?
Download the statement PDFs for those months. Statements older than 12 months are requested from the Request Older Statements section and Citi says requests take 48 to 72 hours.
Is the CSV export the same as a Citi statement?
No. The export lists transactions for the period you filtered, while the statement is the bank's official document with balances, interest, fees and your account details.
