HSBC CSV Statement: Download and Export Transactions

6 min readOctober 26, 2026

Quick Answer: HSBC does not put a CSV button on its statements page. Statements download as PDFs; the CSV (or Excel) file comes from the transaction list. In HSBC UK online banking, open the account, choose Search and filter, set the dates, press Search, then Download at the bottom of the list and pick CSV. For periods the list no longer shows, convert the PDF statement instead.

People searching for an "HSBC CSV statement" are usually looking in the wrong place. HSBC treats a statement as a fixed PDF document and treats CSV as an export of your transaction search results. Once you know the export lives under the transaction list, getting a spreadsheet takes a minute; the harder cases are old periods and closed accounts, where the PDF is all you have.

Where is the CSV option in HSBC online banking?

HSBC UK's own help page on viewing and downloading statements separates the two things clearly. The Statements area, reached from the quick links menu, lets you choose a statement type, a year and a month, and gives you a PDF. Nothing there produces comma-separated data.

The transaction list is different. HSBC says you can download transactions as a PDF and that it also offers other formats, naming Excel (xls) and CSV. You narrow the list by date range, amount or keyword first, then choose the format. So "export statement CSV" really means "export the transactions for the dates a statement covers."

Step by step on a computer

  1. Log on to HSBC UK online banking.
  2. Select the current account or credit card you want.
  3. Choose Search and filter.
  4. Enter the start and end dates. Add an amount or keyword only if you want a subset.
  5. Select Search, then scroll to the end of the results.
  6. Select Download, choose CSV (or Excel if you would rather skip the import step), and select Continue.

The file goes to your usual Downloads folder. Rename it right away with the account and month, for example hsbc-current-2026-09.csv, because every export arrives with a similar generic name and they are easy to mix up.

On the mobile app

HSBC's help describes the app route for statements: log on, pick the account, tap View statements, then the month. That gives you the PDF. For a CSV, use online banking on a computer, where the download options on the transaction list are documented. If you only have a phone, save the PDF and convert it later.

How far back can you export HSBC transactions?

HSBC states that you can view old statements up to six years back in online or mobile banking. That figure is for statements, the PDFs. The searchable transaction list is a separate view, and HSBC's help page does not give a fixed history window for it.

In practice this means:

What you needWhere to get itFormat
Last few weeks or months of activityTransaction list, Search and filter, DownloadCSV, Excel or PDF
A full statement period you can reconcile toStatements, choose year and monthPDF
Activity from years agoStatements (up to six years back)PDF only
A closed accountAsk HSBC for copy statementsPDF or paper

If you set a long date range and the export looks shorter than you expected, split the request into one month per download and compare the row count with the matching PDF. A silent gap is worse than a slow export, because it will only show up later when a balance refuses to agree.

What does the HSBC CSV actually contain?

An exported transaction list is not laid out like the statement. Expect a plain table with a date, a description and a single signed amount column, with money out shown as a negative number. Depending on the account type there may be no running balance, and the file may not include a header row, so open it and look before you feed it to anything else.

Three differences from the PDF catch people out:

  • Period boundaries. The export covers exactly the dates you typed. A statement covers the bank's cycle, which may run from the 14th to the 13th. If you are reconciling, use the dates printed on the statement, not calendar months.
  • Pending items. A live list can include card payments that have not settled. They may change amount or vanish before they reach the statement.
  • Opening and closing balance. The PDF prints both. A CSV usually does not, so you have nothing built in to check the total against.

Opening the file in Excel without damaging it

Double-clicking a CSV lets Excel guess every column. UK dates such as 03/04/2026 can flip to 4 March on a PC set to US format, and long reference numbers can turn into scientific notation. Microsoft's guide to importing text and CSV files describes the safer route: Data > From Text/CSV, pick the delimiter, then Transform Data if a column needs a different type. Our walkthrough on importing bank statements into Excel covers the date and sign fixes in detail.

If the destination is accounting software rather than a spreadsheet, check what it expects first. Xero, for instance, wants specific column headings, which is why a raw HSBC export often needs light editing before upload; the Xero CSV format page shows the layout.

When the PDF is the only record

There are good reasons to work from the statement instead of the transaction list:

  • You need a period older than the list will show.
  • The account is closed, so online banking access is gone and copies come from HSBC as documents.
  • An accountant, lender or tax adviser asked for "statements", and you want the spreadsheet to match those exact pages line for line.
  • You hold accounts in several currencies and want each statement's figures as printed.

In those cases you have a PDF and want rows. You can retype it, try a generic PDF tool, or use a statement parser. QuickBankConvert takes the HSBC PDF you already downloaded, without any login to your bank, and returns one row per transaction with the statement's opening and closing balances shown above the preview so you can check the total. The HSBC bank page explains that process, and our HSBC conversion guide goes deeper on layout quirks. If your accounts span currencies, read the notes on multi-currency statements before you merge files.

HSBC outside the UK

HSBC runs separate online banking platforms by country, and menu names differ. The pattern is usually the same, statements as PDFs and transaction downloads from the account activity screen, but the formats offered vary by market. Check the help pages on your local HSBC site for the exact labels, and if the only thing on offer is a PDF, the conversion route above still applies.

A quick checklist before you use the export

  1. Confirm the date range matches the statement period you are working with.
  2. Count the rows and compare with the number of lines on the PDF.
  3. Add up the amounts and check that opening balance plus that sum equals the closing balance.
  4. Remove or flag pending card payments.
  5. Keep the original CSV untouched and work on a copy.

That last habit costs nothing and saves you from re-downloading when a sort or find-and-replace goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download an HSBC statement as a CSV file?

Not from the statements page, which gives PDFs. Export the transaction list for the same dates instead: Search and filter, Search, then Download and choose CSV.

Why is my HSBC CSV missing transactions?

Check the date range first, since the export covers only the dates you entered rather than the statement cycle. If a long range comes back short, download one month at a time and compare row counts with the PDF.

How many years of HSBC statements can I get online?

HSBC UK says statements are available up to six years back in online and mobile banking. Those are PDFs; older or closed-account records need a request to the bank.

Can I export HSBC transactions from the mobile app?

HSBC's help documents viewing statements in the app, which gives you a PDF. The CSV and Excel download options are documented for the transaction list in online banking on a computer.

Does the HSBC CSV include my balance?

Often it does not include an opening or closing balance, which the PDF statement always prints. Keep the PDF alongside the CSV so you can check totals.
