TD Credit Card Chargeback: TD Bank US and TD Canada

6 min readOctober 27, 2026

Quick Answer: In Canada, try the merchant, wait for the charge to post, then contact TD Credit Cards through the TD app, EasyWeb or 1-800-983-8472 within 30 days after the statement period end date. In the US, dispute through TD Bank Online Banking, the TD Bank app or 1-888-751-9000, and send a written notice within 60 days of the statement to keep your federal billing rights.

"TD" means two separate banks with two separate rulebooks. TD Canada Trust issues TD credit cards in Canada; TD Bank, N.A. issues them in the US. They share a logo and a website, td.com, but the dispute deadlines, phone numbers and escalation routes differ. Find out which one issued your card before you do anything else; it is printed on your statement.

Which TD issued your card?

Look at the statement header and the back of the card: the issuer's legal name and customer service address are printed there, and the currency gives it away too. If you hold both, each card follows its own country's process. The TD Bank page and the guide to converting TD Bank statements show what a US statement looks like.

How to dispute a TD credit card charge in Canada

TD's Canadian page on disputing a credit card transaction sets out these conditions, read on 27 October 2026:

  1. Go to the merchant first. For a dispute about a purchase you made, TD says you must first try to resolve it directly with the merchant. Keep the date and outcome of that contact.
  2. Wait for the charge to post. TD can only help once the transaction has posted, which it says takes about five business days.
  3. For subscriptions, confirm the cancellation. Before disputing a recurring charge, make sure the subscription is actually cancelled; have the cancellation email ready.
  4. Contact TD Credit Cards. Use the TD app, EasyWeb, or call 1-800-983-8472.
  5. File each transaction separately. TD says multiple transactions need multiple disputes.
  6. Watch for follow-up. TD may contact you by SMS, email, mail or phone if it needs more information.

The 30-day window is short. TD asks you to submit within 30 days after the Statement Period End Date of the statement the charge appeared on. Compared with the US, that is half the time. Read each statement when it arrives.

Why the timing is strict: TD notes that its ability to file a dispute for you is limited by Visa's dispute network rules, and that if you do not respond promptly when it asks for information, a credit may be reversed. The chargeback itself runs through Visa, and Visa's deadlines bind TD.

Fraud is handled differently. If you think a charge is fraudulent, contact TD Credit Cards immediately. TD says your card will be locked during the dispute to stop further fraudulent use, and a new card will be mailed to you.

How to dispute a TD credit card charge in the US

TD Bank's US help center, under Transaction Disputes, covers disputing a TD Bank Visa debit or credit card transaction you don't recognize, that is incorrect or that is fraudulent. The ways in are:

  • Log in to Online Banking or the TD Bank app.
  • Call TD Customer Service at 1-888-751-9000.
  • Visit a TD Bank store.

TD Bank's contact page also lists its credit card customer support line, 1-888-561-8861. If you suspect fraud or identity theft involving your accounts, TD Bank's security center gives 1-800-893-8554 for its Phishing and Identity Theft department.

TD Bank's public help pages do not list a deadline or a document checklist, so the US federal rules are the floor. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, carried out by Regulation Z, a written billing error notice must reach the issuer within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the error, and the issuer must resolve it within two billing cycles and no more than 90 days. A phone call can start the process, but the written notice is what protects you legally; the 60-day dispute guide explains what goes in it. Send it to the billing inquiries address printed on your TD Bank statement, which may differ from the payment address.

What records should you have ready?

Either country, the same pile of paper wins disputes:

  • The statement page with the charge, and the statement period end date (Canada) or statement date (US) written beside it.
  • The receipt, order confirmation or booking.
  • Proof you contacted the merchant: emails, chat transcripts, the name of the person you spoke to.
  • Cancellation confirmation for subscriptions, or a return shipping receipt.
  • Delivery tracking for goods that never arrived.

If you are tracing a charge that repeated across several statements, a spreadsheet of every line makes the pattern obvious. For PDF statements, QuickBankConvert converts them into CSV or Excel rows that you can filter by merchant. A free account handles a few statements a month, see pricing.

What happens if TD says no?

Canada. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada describes the route: complain to your bank, which must give you a detailed written response within 56 calendar days. If you are not satisfied, escalate within the bank. After 56 days have passed, or once you have the bank's written response, you can take the complaint to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI), which must make a final written recommendation within 120 calendar days of having what it needs. The FCAC does not resolve individual complaints itself, but its guide to filing a complaint with a bank explains each step.

United States. If TD Bank finds no error, Regulation Z requires it to explain why in writing; read that explanation closely, because it tells you what evidence the merchant supplied. If you still disagree, submit a complaint through the CFPB complaint portal. Keep paying the undisputed balance on time while it is reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to dispute a TD Canada Trust credit card charge?

TD's Canadian dispute page asks you to submit within 30 days after the Statement Period End Date of the statement the charge appeared on. That is TD's own policy, so check your cardholder agreement for anything longer.

Can I dispute a pending TD credit card charge?

Not in Canada: TD says the transaction must post first, which takes about five business days. TD Bank in the US does not publish a separate rule on its help pages, so ask when you call.

Does TD give me a new card after a fraud dispute?

For TD credit cards in Canada, yes. TD says the card is locked during a fraud dispute and a new card is mailed to you.

Can I dispute several TD charges at once?

TD Canada says each transaction needs its own dispute. If a merchant billed you several times, file one per charge.

Where do I complain if TD refuses my dispute?

In Canada, follow TD's complaint process; if you are not satisfied after 56 days or after TD's written response, you can go to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments. In the US, you can submit a complaint to the CFPB.
