Wells Fargo Export Transactions to Excel or CSV
Quick Answer: Sign on to Wells Fargo Online, choose the account, open Download Account Activity under the Accounts tab, confirm the From and To dates, select Comma Delimited (ASCII, Spreadsheet) and click Download. The default range is the last 90 days, and some accounts allow up to 18 months; anything older has to come from the PDF statements.
Wells Fargo lets you save account activity as a comma-delimited text file that Excel reads as a spreadsheet. That covers recent months well. Exporting a whole year or more is different: the activity download is capped, and beyond that cap the only record Wells Fargo keeps online is the monthly statement PDF, which needs converting before Excel can work with it.

How do you export Wells Fargo transactions?
These steps come from Wells Fargo's account activity help page for personal online banking:
- Sign on to Wells Fargo Online from a computer.
- Choose the account whose transactions you want.
- Under the Accounts tab, select Download Account Activity.
- Confirm the From and To dates. Leave them alone for the last 90 days, or change them if your account offers a longer range.
- Select Comma Delimited (ASCII, Spreadsheet) as the file format.
- Click Download, choose Save File, and note the folder it lands in.
Each download covers one account. If you have checking, savings and a card, you will end up with three files, and it helps to rename each one right away (for example wf-checking-2026-q3.csv) so you do not confuse them later.
The business online banking version
Wells Fargo Business Online works a little differently. According to its business account activity page, you go to the Account Services page and select Download Account Activity, and you can send the data to Quicken, QuickBooks (Web Connect) or a spreadsheet. To get more than 90 days, first choose an extended time frame on the Account Activity page and select GO; that unlocks the longer date range on the download page.
How far back can a Wells Fargo export go?
Two numbers from Wells Fargo's help pages define the limits, and a third tells you where older data lives.
| Record | How far back | Source on wellsfargo.com |
|---|---|---|
| Activity download, default | Last 90 days | Account activity FAQ |
| Activity download, extended | Up to 18 months on certain account types | Account activity FAQ |
| Checking, savings and money market history shown online | Up to 18 months | Account activity FAQ |
| Statements for deposit and mortgage accounts | Up to 7 years | Online statements FAQ |
| Statements for credit cards, personal loans, home equity lines | Up to 2 years | Online statements FAQ |
| Statements for auto loans | Up to 12 months | Online statements FAQ |
Wells Fargo does not list which account types get the 18-month export, so the simplest test is to try it: set the From date 18 months back and see whether the download accepts it.
The statement window for a closed account is short. The statements FAQ says online access lasts roughly 90 days after an account is closed, so save the PDFs you need before then.
How do you export Wells Fargo statements to Excel?
If you searched "how to export wells fargo statements to excel," you may mean one of two jobs, and they have different answers.
Job one: recent activity in a spreadsheet. Use the comma-delimited download above, then open it in Excel. Prefer Excel's Data > From Text/CSV over double-clicking the file, because the import dialog lets you set the delimiter and column types before Excel guesses wrong.
Job two: the statements themselves, often for a past year. The activity download will not reach that far, so start from the PDFs:
- Sign on and go to Statements and Documents.
- Select one statement at a time and save it as a PDF.
- Convert each PDF into rows of date, description and amount.
For step 3, our Wells Fargo statement page covers the conversion for Wells Fargo layouts, so the details are not repeated here. In short, you upload the PDF statement (no Wells Fargo sign-in is shared), review the parsed rows and the statement's opening and closing balances on screen, and download Excel or CSV. Statements with checks, deposits and card activity on separate sections come out as one list with signed amounts. A free account allows 3 statements a month, which is enough to test one quarter before committing to a full year; pricing lists the larger plans.
Excel's own Get Data from PDF is the other option on Windows Microsoft 365. It works best on short statements, and you will usually need to combine one table per page and delete repeated header rows yourself.
What does the comma-delimited file look like?
Wells Fargo's comma-delimited export is bare. Older downloads have typically had no header row at all, just five columns: date, amount, an asterisk placeholder, a check number column that is often blank, and the description. Expect to add your own headers.
Cleanup checklist before you build totals or pivot tables:
- Insert a header row (Date, Amount, Flag, Check, Description) so filters and tables know what each column is.
- Delete the placeholder column if it holds nothing but asterisks.
- Check the amount signs. Deposits are positive and withdrawals negative in a single amount column, which is what Excel formulas want. Do not flip them unless you are merging with a file that uses the opposite convention.
- Convert dates if needed. If the date column is left-aligned, Excel is treating it as text. Use Data > Text to Columns, choose Date with MDY order, and finish.
- Format the sheet as a table (Ctrl+T) once the columns are right. Totals, filters and pivot tables all work better from a table.
If the file opens with everything jammed into column A, your computer's regional settings probably expect semicolons. The From Text/CSV import fixes that by letting you choose comma as the delimiter.
When should you use the PDF statements instead of the export?
The export is the faster file, but it is not always the right record. Use the statements when:
- The dates are older than the export allows. Past 18 months, or past 90 days on accounts without the extended range.
- Someone asks for official statements. Lenders, landlords, auditors and courts usually want the bank's document, not a spreadsheet you made. Send the PDF and keep the spreadsheet for your own analysis.
- You need opening and closing balances per period. The activity download is a list of transactions; the statement prints the balances you reconcile against.
- The account is a credit card or loan with a short statement window. Save what is available now; Wells Fargo shows two years of card statements and twelve months for auto loans.
For tax preparation, IRS guidance on recordkeeping for small businesses lists bank statements among the supporting documents to keep, which is another reason to download the PDFs even when you work from the export.
Wells Fargo and QuickBooks
The business download includes a QuickBooks Web Connect option. Wells Fargo's Web Connect page says that on Windows you choose Open when prompted and then pick an existing QuickBooks account or create a new one; on a Mac you use File > Import > From Web Connect and browse to the downloaded file. The date range you pick on the download page decides which transactions go in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Wells Fargo export transactions directly to an Excel .xlsx file?
No. The download is a comma-delimited text file, which Excel opens and can then save as a workbook.
Why can I only download 90 days of Wells Fargo activity?
Ninety days is the default range. Some account types allow up to 18 months if you change the From date; Wells Fargo does not publish which accounts qualify.
How do I get Wells Fargo transactions older than 18 months?
Download the monthly statement PDFs from Statements and Documents, which go back up to seven years for deposit accounts, then convert them to a spreadsheet.
Can I download Wells Fargo statements after closing my account?
Only briefly. Wells Fargo says online access ends about 90 days after closure, so save the PDFs before then or request copies from the bank.
